2022-04-19

Towards the digital transformation of the maritime world

Furuno Electric Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "we"; headquartered in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture; Yukio Furuno, President) will be present at the "SEA JAPAN 2022", the largest maritime exhibition in Japan, from April 20 to 22 at the Tokyo Big Sight event hall and will be exhibiting a wide range of innovative solutions and technologies.

Sea Japan is the largest maritime exhibition in Japan and is hosted and visited by all the major players in the industry such as shipping companies, shipbuilders, and marine electronics manufacturers from all over the world.

This year, on the theme of the ‘Digital transformation of ships’, we are going to present a whole range of innovative and unique solutions and technologies, such as Augmented Reality (AR) -our well-known ENVISION- which allows information to be superimposed on captured and displayed live imagery, Virtual Reality (VR) which allows us to offer a 3D view of all surrounding vessels in order to be able to plan navigation routes and manoeuvres over mid and long distances with our new [3D Bird View], technologies to assist in the docking of vessels with a system that measures the relationship (speed, distance) between the vessel and the quay with our [Berthing Aid System], or solutions to provide remote support and maintenance of equipment on board a vessel with FOP [Furuno Open Platform] and [HermAce]. Finally, Furuno will show the new FAR-2x28 NXT Series X-band Navigation Radars, with solid-state technology, as well as our Planning Station, which gathers all the information from several devices on a single touch screen.

On Wednesday, April 20, the first day of the seminar we will introduce the latest trends in the autonomous navigation market and the latest features of the 'AR navigation system', '3D Bird View', and 'Berthing Aid System' that Furuno is working on for automated navigation.

We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition.

Introduction to our latest features

AR NAVIGATION SYSTEM new features

The "AR-navigation system" will introduce the new function "Navigation data recording function" "UKHO Tide and Ocean Current Display" "Safety Contour display", which will be released in April.

  • Navigation data recording function
The Navigation Recorder records and stores images from the last 30 days of navigation in an external storage device. It allows you to analyse and see what happened in the event of an accident or other situation. In addition, the recording data can also be used as training materials for the crews.
    * For a capacity of 2 TB, up to 720 hours can be recorded. Recording time may vary depending on circumstances
    • UKHO® ADP current and tide display
This is a feature that allows the display of ocean currents and tides using ADP*1 (Admiralty Digital Publication) data provided by UKHO*2 (the UK Hydrographic Office). This further enhances safety by allowing mariners to monitor not only the maritime traffic in real time, but also the sea conditions through the overlaid AR data.
The purchase of UKHO data and a license key are required to unlock the function.
*1 ADP stands for ADMIRALTY Digital Publication that are provided by UKHO. It consists of a package of hydrographic data that displays tidal currents, tides, lighthouse information, radio signal information, etc. and is compatible with Windows OS.
*2 UKHO stands for UK Hydrographic Office.
    • Safety Contour Display
The safety contour feature from ENC (Electronic Navigation Charts) charts enhances awareness and alertness by changing the target color from Base colors to Attentional colors (Yellow, Orange and Red) whenever objects are coming close. This feature is included in the standard package from the new version.

Introduction to the latest systems developed for the realisation of autonomous navigation.

Research, development and initiatives in the field of Autonomous Navigation is actively encouraged woldwide, with the aim of improving navigational safety and reducing the workload of mariners. Furuno is also developing systems to support "watchkeeping (recognition)" and "manoeuvring/collision avoidance (decision making)" using Furuno's unique sensor technology. At this exhibition, in addition to the AR navigation system shown above, we will also exhibit the 3D Bird View system, which uses VR technology to support watchkeeping operations, and "Berthing Aid System", which uses a LiDAR, a camera, and other sensors to accurately measure the distance and angle between the ship's hull and the quay to supports the safe docking or departure of ships.

The Planning Station now compatible with the NAPA Voyage Optimization

  • The Furuno Planning Station is a very easy to use touch screen that can integrate and display all the information needed for voyage planning, tracking and management, including radar, AIS, weather information and route maps. In addition, the Planning Station is now compatible with the NAPA Voyage Optimization*, an easy-to-use solution for improving operational efficiency by optimizing route and speed profiles for any sea passage taking into account ship performance and weather condition, reducing fuel costs and CO2 emissions.
Furthermore, a new function destined to optimizing ship management operations between ship and shore has been added to acquire, monitor & display information on managed vessels via the internet.
A demo is available at the Furuno booth to familiarise yourself with the Planning Station and NAPA Voyage Optimization feature.
    * Additional contract is necessary to use this function.
