2026-07-23

Furuno, in collaboration with the Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering and the Osaka Prefecture Department of Environment, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, has launched a special website (https://future-vision.furuno.co.jp/en/osakabay/) for the "Zero Marine Litter Osaka, Designing The Future" project.

About the "Zero Marine Litter Osaka, Designing The Future"

Since February 2025, Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka Prefecture Department of Environment, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and Furuno have partnered to launch the "Zero Marine Litter Osaka, Designing The Future" project to realize the "Osaka Blue Ocean Vision."

This project aims to achieve a society with zero new pollution from marine plastic litter by 2050. As the first step, we aim for zero plastic litter inflow into Osaka Bay. Through field surveys, information dissemination to local residents, and awareness activities, we are accelerating our efforts to create a future of "zero marine litter in Osaka Bay."

The project leverages the strengths of the three parties:

  • Osaka Prefecture: Promoting environmental improvement through policy (Achieving zero marine litter entering Osaka Bay, etc.).
  • Osaka University: Academic knowledge and technology development (Accumulation of academic knowledge and development of fundamental technologies contributing to marine environment conservation and restoration, etc.).
  • Furuno: Addressing environmental challenges through technology (Initiatives to improve accuracy in understanding the current state of marine litter, etc.).

Main sections of the special website

The website provides updates on the project's progress, including:

  • ROLES: Details on the collaboration and specific activities of the three partners.
  • PROGRESS REPORT: Reports on activities such as underwater litter detection experiments using fish finders, the "Marine Future Project" with high school students, and presentations at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
